Comstock’s Garcia qualifies for state cross-country meet

The cross-country season has come to an end for all of Comstock’s cross-country runners except one.

Freshman Arleth Garcia finished 17th overall in a time of 13:52.05. However, the top 10 runners to finish who were not already on state-qualified teams also advanced to the state meet in Round Rock.

Garcia finished ninth among those non-affiliated runners to earn her spot at state.

She will run Monday, Nov. 23, at 9 a.m. at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Garcia wasn’t the only Comstock girl to run at the regional meet.

Also competing for Comstock was Emily Mila, who was 37th in 14:39.30.

Buena Vista’s Mariana Sanchez was the top female runner, taking first out of 111 runners in a time of 12:48.54. Buena Vista also won the girls team title with 41 points. Munday was second with 90 points followed by Roby with 99 points, Aspermont with 164 points, and Cross Plains with 169 points.

The Comstock varsity boys team competed in the Class 1-A, Region II meet in San Angelo Tuesday and finished fifth overall with 137 points.

Only the top three teams advanced to the state meet in Round Rock.

Clyde Eula was first with 46 points. Munday was second with 77 points followed by Rankin with 92 points and Paint Rank with 128 points.

The Panthers’ top finisher was Federico Terrones. He was 27th overall in a time of 20:08.71. He was joined by Matthew Sanchez, who was 36th in 20:23.46; Jaiden Sanchez, who was 39th in 20:37.70; Brett Clark, who was 40th in 20:38.53; Bryce Henderson, who was 43rd in 20:44.53; Samuel Isaac, who was 54th in 21:25.79; and Jorge Cardenas, who was 109th in 24:48.00. Mertzon Irion County’s Tayte Cormier was first overall in 17:31.31. A total of 117 runners competed in the race.
