District of Innovation Rumors Addressed

I hope your summer is going well. We are working hard at the school, getting ready for the 2017-2018 school year. It will be here before we know it!

It has come to my attention that there are some rumors making the rounds about the CISD District of Innovation Plan. I would like the opportunity to attempt to dispel these rumors. Here are some of the rumors:

Rumor #1. The school day at CISD is going to be so much longer than before. To accommodate the shorter calendar (Last we the school year was 175 days, this year it will be only 170 days) we extended the school day only 10 minutes. We will start 5 minutes earlier in the morning, as the bell will ring at 7:50 AM, instead of 7:55 AM. Students that have arrived at CISD by bus, will not be leaving Del Rio earlier! Buses will leave Del Rio at 7:00 AM, as before! Students are already at the campus; we are just beginning classes 5 minutes earlier. We will end the day only 5 minutes later in the afternoon. The last bell will ring at 3:30 PM, instead of 3:25 PM. Last year, buses leave CISD until 3:30 PM. This year, we will leave about 3:34PM. Your child will be arriving in Del Rio only 4-5 minutes later than last year.

Rumor #2. The District of Innovation (DOI) Plan will allow CISD to hire uncertified teachers. The only changes that were made were to “take back” some of the authority that School Board had in the past and to provide more learning opportunities for your children. Occasionally, we may have a non-core class that we may not have a certified teacher to teach. The DOI Plan allows the School Board to approve that a certified teacher teach only one class out of their certification area. For instance, this would allow a certified history teacher to teach one class of PE. Additionally, with the DOI Plan, the School Board can locally certify a person with extensive private industry experience to teach a Career and Technology class. An example would be a welder with extensive private experience could be certified to teach a welding class. Who better to teach your children welding than a person with welding experience? Any candidate for such a certification would still be held accountable to all the fingerprinting and background checks of certified educators. They would also be held to the Educator Code of Ethics.

If you have any other questions about the DOI Plan, PLEASE call me at 432-292-4444. We at CISD believe that the innovations that we have instituted will benefit all our stakeholders and make CISD an even better school in the future. Thanks!
